What is a constitutional remedy, really?
Why healing doesn't hinge on one perfect remedy - and why this is a good thing.
If you’ve ever worked with a homeopath or even just read about homeopathy online you’ve probably come across the term constitutional remedy. And if you’re anything like some of my clients, that term might bring up more stress than clarity.
“Did we find the right one?”
“Is this it?”
“What if I didn’t explain things the right way?”
“What if there’s a better match and I’m missing out on healing?”
I hear this quite often and it breaks my heart! I can feel the amount of pressure and anxiety people are putting on themselves and on the process and I want to immediately reassure them at it is safe to exhale and just be when they are in session with me.
So let’s talk about what a constitutional remedy actually is - what most homeopaths mean by it, and what I mean when I use it with clients. More importantly, let’s talk about the pressure it creates, and why I don’t want you getting stuck in the perfectionism spiral that can come with it.
What homeopaths usually mean by a “constitutional remedy”
Traditionally, a constitutional remedy is the one that matches your full picture - not just one symptom, but the whole of you. Your physical sensations, your emotional tendencies, your mental stress patterns, the way your body reacts to weather or hormones or food or life. All of it. I like to call it your “constellation of symptoms.”
And in classical homeopathy, we tend to give one remedy at a time. Not a mix. Not one for the headache and another for the digestion and a third for the PMS. Just one. One remedy to address your entire system. (be sure to go back and read my post on “why one remedy” that explains this in more detail!)
But here’s the part I want to emphasize today: This whole idea of “the one right remedy” can become paralyzing for people.
Let’s release the idea of one perfect match
In my practice, the anxiety about getting it right shows up all the time.
Clients worry that they didn’t describe their experience well enough. Or that they forgot something important. Or that they’re not “doing it right” because we’ve tried a couple remedies already and they’re still not 100%.
And I get it. It’s vulnerable to share your story, and it’s easy to want a clean, satisfying solution at the end of it.
But healing doesn’t always look like one remedy that fixes everything in one go. And that’s okay.
There are over a thousand homeopathic remedies. Do I believe the one we give you matters? Absolutely. Do I work hard to match your physical, emotional, and energetic patterns to the right remedy? Yes, always.
But do I believe there is only one remedy that will ever help you? No. That’s not how real-life healing tends to work.
We’re layered beings. And remedies are part of that unfolding.
Some remedies will do a lot of heavy lifting - especially when your current state strongly matches something like Pulsatilla, Sepia, or Lycopodium. These remedies can bring beautiful, sweeping change.
But most people - especially those with complex histories or chronic conditions - will need more than one remedy over time. And that doesn’t mean we got it wrong. It means you’re healing in layers.
I love how Rajan Sankaran (a brilliant homeopath and huge mentor of mine) talks about this. He describes how many of us carry more than one “core” remedy state - almost like different facets of the same jewel. Different states can get activated depending on what’s happening in our lives, what stressors are present, what stage of life we’re in, etc.
So even if you resonate deeply with one remedy right now, it doesn’t mean that’s the only one you’ll ever need.
You’re not a failure if you need more than one remedy
Let’s just say this clearly:
You’re not doing anything wrong if you need to try a few remedies before things start to shift.
You’re not broken if you respond to one remedy but then need something else later.
You’re not missing your healing because you didn’t describe your symptoms “perfectly.”
Even Hahnemann - the founder of homeopathy - used multiple remedies with his patients. It was never a one-remedy-fixes-everything-forever kind of system. That’s a modern myth we need to let go of.
So if you’ve been feeling pressure to find “the one,” I want to gently invite you to breathe that out. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being honest. It’s about showing up as you are and trusting the process to unfold.
What a constitutional remedy means to me
When I use the phrase “constitutional remedy,” what I really mean is this: the remedy that best matches your whole system right now.
Not just your anxiety. Not just your digestion. Not just your hormones. All of it. The full you.
That’s what I’m looking for in your case. The common thread running through your mind, body, and emotions. The pattern that, when we address it, allows everything else to start moving.
And sometimes we find that thread quickly. Sometimes it takes a few layers to reveal it. But either way - it’s not a test. It’s a conversation. A relationship. A living, breathing process.
My goal is not for you to need me forever
What I want for you is this:
I want you to know what remedies support you.
I want you to feel confident when a flare comes up.
I want you to have a few go-to allies - remedies that feel like old friends.
I want you to trust that your healing isn’t dependent on one perfect prescription, but on your ability to tune in and respond to what’s showing up now.
Maybe you’ll always resonate most with one or two remedies. Maybe you’ll rotate through a few that reflect your deeper constitution. Maybe something totally unexpected will bring healing at the right time.
All of that is normal. All of that is welcome.
You’re not broken if it takes a few tries.
You’re not late.
You’re not missing anything.
You’re healing - and it’s allowed to be layered, nonlinear, and full of discovery.
And I promise you this, the process of healing with homeopathy will bring you value beyond just healing physical symptoms (although we will do that too). It will bring you a greater sense of self, understanding, compassion, deep reflection. It will help you become the most whole version of you possible because we are untangling you from all the things that have gotten in the way of that.
Trust the process. Trust in your healing. And until you do - I will hold that vision for you.
